My care philosophy
If you are living with back or neck problems, I want you to know that I’m here to help you find the right solution for you. Most people get better without surgery, and I believe in exploring every option before considering an operation. When we meet, I will take the time to really understand your symptoms, explain what is happening in plain language, and work with you to decide the best path forward.
You will never be just another case number. I see spine care as a partnership. That is why I work closely with specialist physiotherapists, pain consultants and other spinal surgeons to build a treatment plan around your needs, not just around what I can do in an operating theatre. Surgery is a powerful tool, but it may not be the first answer and sometimes, when surgery is needed, it may require the expertise of more than one surgeon due to the complexity of your specific condition.
By exploring all your reasonable treatment options and by working with other complex spinal surgeons, I aim to deliver the best care possible to you.
I am also committed to transparency. I am the only spinal surgeon in the UK who publishes my surgical outcomes publicly, because I believe you deserve to know how well treatments work. This openness helps me learn, improve and give you honest advice based on real results.
How I can help you
I specialise in complex spinal problems, the kind that can feel overwhelming when other treatments have not worked or when the diagnosis is not straightforward. Whether you are struggling with persistent neck or back pain, sciatica from a slipped disc, spinal stenosis, spondylolisthesis, scoliosis or kyphosis, I have the training and experience to help.
My expertise covers the full range of spinal conditions, including spinal deformity, trauma, tumours and degenerative wear and tear. I am trained in advanced techniques like microscopic and minimally invasive surgery, which often mean smaller incisions, less pain and faster recovery.
But I only recommend surgery when there is a clear benefit, and I will always explore non-surgical options with you first.
Beyond the operating theatre, I care deeply about understanding what matters most to you, whether that’s getting back to work, playing with your grandchildren or simply sleeping through the night. Those goals shape every conversation we have.
My training and experience
I graduated with honours from Cardiff University in 2002 and completed specialist training in trauma and orthopaedics, followed by advanced spinal surgery training in Manchester. I then undertook an internationally recognised fellowship in complex spine surgery in Australia and have visited leading spine centres in the USA, Germany, Denmark, France, and Singapore to refine my skills.
I hold a Fellowship with the Royal College of Surgeons (Trauma & Orthopaedics) and I am a Chartered Manager. I have also earned an MBA, a Master’s in Leadership and Management, and trained at Harvard Business School on Value-Based Healthcare.
Currently, I serve as Divisional Medical Director for Tertiary Medicine and Critical Care at Northern Care Alliance NHS Foundation Trust, overseeing clinical quality and safety across multiple specialities. I’m also an Honorary Lecturer at Salford University and an Academic Advisor at the University of Manchester.
Awards and contributions
My work has been recognised with several academic prizes, including the Peter Mallimson Research Prize and the Mark Tillitson Medical Research Prize. I am a member of the Scoliosis Research Society and the British Association of Spine Surgeons, among other professional bodies.
I have published extensively on patient outcomes, spinal infections, blood loss management and healthcare economics. My research on minimising blood transfusion in major spinal surgery has been widely cited, and I regularly present at national and international conferences.
I am passionate about equality and community service. I currently sit on the Board of Trustees for Manchester High School for Girls and previously served as a Trustee of Stop Hate UK. Following the Manchester Arena attack in 2017, I spoke publicly about unity and community resilience, an experience that reinforced my commitment to dignity, respect and compassionate care.
Within the NHS, I lead on patient safety investigations and act as the clinical lead for consent, ensuring every patient’s voice is heard and respected. I have led one of the largest spinal patient safety look-back reviews in the UK and teach nationally on consent and spinal injury.
Why choose me?
I know that facing spinal problems can be frightening and confusing. My goal is to cut through that uncertainty, give you clear answers and work alongside you to restore your quality of life.
Whether that means physiotherapy, injections, surgery or simply reassurance, I’ll help you find the right solution, tailored to you, grounded in evidence and delivered with compassion.
I look forward to meeting you and helping you move forward.

My care philosophy
If you are having difficulties or living with pain in your shoulder or upper arm, I am here to work with you to find out what the cause is and find a solution that works for you. When we meet, I will take the time to properly understand your symptoms and signs, and explain what is happening in clear, plain language.
Shoulder problems are often complex and poorly explained elsewhere. My role is to give you clarity and work with you to decide the best way forward.
I work closely with specialist physiotherapists, radiologists and, when needed, other surgeons or clinicians to build a treatment plan around your needs. Many shoulder conditions improve with the right diagnosis, targeted rehabilitation or injection therapy and time.
My approach is to explore every appropriate option with you before considering an operation, but where this is the right course of action for you we can take this forward. I will tell you clearly what treatment can achieve, what it cannot, and what the likely recovery and risks are.
How I can help you
I specialise in shoulder and upper limb conditions, including cases where symptoms persist despite previous treatment or where the diagnosis is not straightforward.
Whether you are struggling with rotator cuff pain, shoulder instability, frozen shoulder, arthritis, AC joint problems or a sports-related injury, I have the training and experience to help.
My expertise covers the full spectrum of shoulder conditions, from degenerative and inflammatory problems to traumatic injuries. I am trained in advanced arthroscopic (keyhole) and open shoulder techniques, which often allow for reliable outcomes and a structured recovery.
I care about understanding what matters most to you, whether that is returning to work, sport, independence or simply sleeping without pain. Those goals shape the conversations and decisions we make.
My training and experience
I graduated with honours from the University of Birmingham in 2004. Following early surgical training in the Midlands, I returned to the North West to complete specialist higher training in Trauma and Orthopaedics. I was awarded Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons (Trauma & Orthopaedics) in 2012.
My subspecialty training in shoulder and upper limb surgery was undertaken in high-volume centres including Wrightington and Stockport, followed by competitive international travelling fellowships. This included training at the Mayo Clinic in the USA and specialist centres in Europe.
These experiences refined my approach to both complex shoulder reconstruction and sports-related injuries.
I am the Clinical Head of Division for Trauma & Orthopaedics at Manchester Foundation Trust. I have earned an MBA with distinction, a Master’s in Leadership and Management and am a Chartered Manager, providing a deeper understanding of healthcare systems and service delivery alongside surgical management.
I practise in both NHS and private settings in Greater Manchester and Cheshire and remain actively involved in training and mentoring the next generation of surgeons.
Awards and contributions
I have been awarded a number of accolades including the BESS Mayo Elbow Award, ESSKA Travelling Fellow Award, BESS Ian Kelly Research Prize and the Wrightington Gold Medal Travelling Award. I was awarded a distinction in my MBA and Master’s in Leadership and Management and am a member of the British Elbow and Shoulder Society.
I have published peer-reviewed research and book chapters in orthopaedic and upper limb surgery. My work has been presented at national and international meetings, with a focus on patient outcomes and surgical decision-making.
Within the NHS, as Clinical Head of Division for one of the largest Orthopaedic divisions in the country, I am actively involved in patient safety, governance and service improvement. I have been invited as faculty on a number of teaching courses, passing surgical skills on to other specialists.
In addition to planned work, I also have expertise in major trauma, having worked in two major trauma centres. I was the on-call orthopaedic trauma surgeon overseeing and organising the surgical response on the night of the Manchester Arena attack.
Why choose me?
Shoulder problems can be painful, frustrating and disruptive. My aim is to provide clear information, guide you through the difficulties you are experiencing and work alongside you to improve your function and quality of life.
Whether your treatment involves physiotherapy, injections, surgery or reassurance, I will help you find the right solution tailored to you, grounded in evidence and delivered with care and compassion.
I look forward to meeting you and helping you move forward.
